From the staff of the Godmother of Malibu, I’d like to take a moment to send out a warm hearted congratulations to the entire Oracle Team USA and more specifically, to Larry Ellison himself, for a phenomenal win of the 2013 America’s Cup. From an 8 – 1 deficit, Team Oracle USA won seven straight races to tie up the series, then won a convincing victory over Emirates Team New Zealand. The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport. The comeback from behind win for Team Oracle USA was was a phenomenal win for Ellison, who is known for his vigor to win.
Team New Zealand won the right to challenge for the Cup by winning the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup in July and August of 2013. The 34th America’s Cut was the longest ever Cup in both numbers of days, and races to give everyone who followed the race, one of the best races in yachting history. As the race progressed, the crowds along the shores along San Francisco near the picturesqe Gold Gate Bridge swelled, and the buzz in the news went international.

For those of you who don’t know Larry Ellison, he not only is he a well respected American business magnate, and co-founder and chief executive of Oracle Corporation, which makes enterprise-class database software, he is listed by Forbes as the third wealthiest man in America. More importantly, at least to us, he owns the Malibu Racket Club.
The 34th running of the America’s Cup was held in San Francisco Bay this year from Sept. 7 through the 25th. It was broadcast around the world, but few places were prouder that all of us here at the Godmother and Malibu Racket Club. What a comeback. We never gave up home that you would capture the Cup and keep it here in the US.

The yacht, Oracle Team USA 17, is an American’s Cut 72 class yacht, which is a wing sail trimaran. The AC72 class has the following maximum specifications:
- overall length: 26.2 metres (86 ft)
- waterline length: 22.0 metres (72.2 ft)
- beam: 14.0 metres (45.9 ft)
- weight: 5,900 kilograms (13,000 lb)
- maximum draught: 4.4 metres (14 ft)
- crew: 11
With this design, the vessel is designed to fly on winglets that lift the 13,000 lbs vessel out of the water to reduce drag. These carbon fiber wings have to be able to withstand up to 15-tons of force. Oracle Team USA 17 can actually can sail through the water faster than the wind at a rate of slightly higher than 2.3 times faster than the true wind speed. Number 17 has actually hit speeds of just over 50 miles per hour, unthinkable a few years ago.
